Community Benefit

We are evaluating a fund that recognises the service residents provide to the nation by hosting a low level waste facility.

The fund is an agreement negotiated with Government to recognise the service Copeland provides to the nation by hosting a Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) close to the village of Drigg. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) pays £1.5 million a year into the fund for every year that the Vault 9 repository is operating; in addition to an initial endowment of £10 million. In partnership with Rocket Science, we are delivering an evaluation of the Fund’s outputs and impact during years 4 to 9 of its operation. This includes evidencing the Fund’s value for money, accountability and delivery against the Co-operation Agreement (signed by Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria County Council and the NDA).
